|The Anderlecht captain was heavily linked with West Ham.
Throughout maxbet January West Ham were linked with the signing of Anderlecht midfielder Leander Dendoncker. The versatile Belgium international, who can also play at centre-back or right-back, was thriving in the Belgian Pro League and West Ham’s hierarchy were very keen on a move.
However, they were not keen on the asking price. Anderlecht wanted £18 million for the player, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Now West Ham did, in fact, make a bid for the player. It seemed, on deadline day at least, that the Hammers might even manage to push a deal over the line.
But once again the Brussels side came back to say no way to the terms being offered by West Ham. maxbet As reported by Het Laatste Nieuws, the Hammers offered only €5 million (£4.4m) up front for the player with the overall fee eventually rising to €15 million (£13.3m), still £4.7 million short of Anderlecht’s asking price.
Last night West Ham fans got a chance to see Dendoncker in action. He was a surprise pick at centre-back in Belgium’s back three yesterday against England. He was one of several Belgium players that excelled in the game, as the Red Devils ran out 1-0 winners.
He kept Jamie Vardy and Marcus Rashford largely quiet throughout and mostly dealt with Danny Rose when called upon.
This summer Dendoncker has been told he can leave but, as reported by Diario AS, West Ham may now be outplayed in the market. He has interest from both Real Betis and Sevilla.
West Ham fans were unhappy with a lot of things in the January transfer market including the lack of a deal for Dendoncker.
Perhaps they should have just opened their wallets for the Belgian talent. maxbet
